Did you know?
Just down the Road from Artaius offices in Stevenage lies the estate of Brocket Hall near Hatfield in Hertfordshire. The present house was built in 1760 for Sir Matthew Lamb, however a house had stood on the grounds since 1239. The grounds were designed by Capability Brown.
The second Lord Melbourne, William Lamb, went on to become Queen Victoria’s first Prime Minister. William’s wife Caroline was first to introduce the Waltz into England at Brocket Hall, and who later on embarked on a disastrous affair with Lord Byron!
The most recent owner, the present Lord Brocket, is famed for having been jailed for fraud and his TV appearance on “I’m a Celebrity Get me out of here!” since when his show biz career has taken off.
Brocket Hall is now leased as a luxurious Hotel and country club. It played the part if the country headquarters of the Secret Service in the 2003 film Johnny English, and rather appropriately, it was the scene of a wedding reception in the ITV series Footballers Wives!
