Did you know?
Artaius is based in Stevenage in Hertfordshire approximately 30 miles to the north of central London, but did you know that Stevenage was England’s first New Town, designated as such in 1946! The pedestrianised town centre was opened in 1959 by Queen Elizabeth II and was England’s first purpose built traffic free shopping zone.
Stevenage Old town dates back to the Norman days situated at the side of the Great North Road at its highest point along the route linking London with York!
The author E M Forster lived in Stevenage Old Town and based the house in his book, “Howards End”, on his Stevenage home named Rooksnest adjacent to St Nicholas’s Church. Howards End was made into a film in 1992.
The town also is the birthplace of Lewis Hamilton of Formula 1 fame, who is the youngest British driver ever to win the F1 World Championship in the 2008 season.
